They changed the lore so many times I can never tell if people are referring to the old lore or the old old lore.

As Someone who casually played this BACK WHEN THIS HAPPEN, Its was a extremely interesting and really fun concept for Riot to do, Just the Concept of "This Champ is now Gone because the Lore killed him." Was insane and ive always been hyped for something to this scale to happen again (just not completely disabling them, like Oh Rework is happeneing because this champ just died in lore or a new champ was introduced and changed this champ) But Riots creativity and limit testing of their idea's truely will never be this level again.

I remember this, it was so fun, from the lore on the League website which was written so good, and Gangplank "dying" in the lore which caused him to be disabled... Good times man.

Gangplank didn't just storm the workshop of Sarah Fortune's parents. He commissioned Sarah's parents to make new pistols for him, then came by and demanded they give the pistols to him for free since it would be an honor for him to wield them. They refused, he warned them that was going to have consequences, and he walked out without the guns. At the time, Gangplank was something of a defacto ruler of Bilgewater and respected as a pirate to whom you only willingly did business with if you either wanted to pay tribute, or you could stop him taking what he wanted, so this behavior wasn't unexpected. Perhaps some would say that accepting the contract to make the pistols was naïve. In any case, Gangplank came back later after giving the parents some time to reconsider, which is a fairly standard affair in those sorts of shakedowns (leaving the victim to get nervous, or for their family/friends to plead with them to just pay so they'll be safe). When they hadn't submit to his attempt to claim the guns, he killed them, and as more of a token gesture he shot their daughter, too. Sarah Fortune knew where the guns he commissioned were hidden, so she claimed them for herself and swore to kill Gangplank with them. To further complicate the story, her parents were utterly idiotic in this situation, and I don't mean because they accepted the commission. The Fortunes had the potential to just give him the guns and brag that Gangplank used their weapons (something Gangplank was offering to them as 'payment' so he wouldn't mind). It is historically considered a far higher payment for somebody of his station to allow you to market your goods as being the ones they use than to receive a normal trade of currency, with the public response even going so far as to have made entire markets out of certain flowers or vegetables that spanned continents. Blacksmiths in the past would happily forge weapons for rulers at no cost and offer them to the rulers at the off-chance they'd wear them for one campaign, and usually not even have them wielded. Just having the weapon accepted was a privilege. You have to understand that with how this actually works in the real world, to have somebody of his status actually walk around with your weapons would have set Sarah's parents up for a life of wealth and prestige. Unfortunately, her parents were stupid.

Wicked should've eaten some oranges and be K.

I thought it was a great event, people can learn to live without 1 champion for 1 week.

Rito should, as a fun little detail, remove Yasuo, Yummi and Zed from game.
  • It's a little sad to see Riot peaked with their story telling and interaction with their world so long ago. As much of the controversy there was in League around the same time in Season 5 (The juggernaut rework and Gangplank rework coming out right before worlds with basically all of them being overpowered with no time to adjust) Bilgewater was the coolest event. But I wonder, is League just too big now to do anything on that scale ever again? They've got so much to do now with the battle pass thing, the long champion designing process, pro play etc etc.

7:00 That also means that they went out of their way to make a free skin compatible with two iterations of the champions in VFX and SFX, knowing full well that the older kit's skin version would only be out for 1 week. They truly were a different bunch from the guys that charge $500 for a single skin

I still to this day wish they added typhoon claws to the main game

I honestly love when games have the guts to make event changes like the (temporary) removal of champs for the added engagement, it's a very strong stance but one that gets me more into a game's events, the ongoing development and fleshing-out of a given world. I think Arrowhead's Helldivers 2 is the most recent example that comes to mind, and despite the matters of retention and the longer timescale of the Galactic War they face I think it's a great example of how great live service games can be, when you have less of a conflict of interests and an organization willing to take the risks necessary for those interesting event choices

As someone who started playing less than a year ago, I appreciate videos going over the games previous states
  • I remember when Jhin came out they changed the 4 champion of his kills. It was kinda cool too.
  • @darkskyxgames
I remember that event. They made a rework of the skin, they asked players a question and then Gangplank was dead. Then, days later... Boom! He revived and we got that last skin as free, with a new one as his default. Absolutely genius.

  • @Zthewise
