It's worth noting that this is the only SpongeBob DVD to use the Paramount logo from 1986 in the opening which is pretty vintage, even for the time.
-
Okay so I had this DVD as a kid and watched it all of the time, and one of the episodes is “Something Smells” in which SpongeBob gets “the ugly”. However, during the scene in which SpongeBob says hi to the building, there’s a really weird error only on the DVD where the audio actually glitches and SpongeBob instead of saying “Hi Building” his next line of dialogue plays twice in a row. It’s really strange and hard to describe but you could probably find the clip on YouTube, but for the longest time I just thought that’s how the episode was so when I first watched the episode on TV and the audio was correct I was very very confused.

This was the first Spongebob DVD my mom bought me! I still have it and actually got it signed by Tom Kenny back in late 2017! He was sweet and charming and it was a real joy to meet him and watch him perform Best Day Ever.
-
My favorite dvd easter egg is from the season 1 boxset, there's a tour of bikini bottom with Patchy in which he confirms that Sandy's house was made by Nasa.

i have a VHS copy of Nautical Nonsense but with a sticker that reads "*FOR DISTRIBUTOR PROMOTIONAL USE ONLY. NOT FOR SALE, RENTAL, DUPLICATION, OR PUBLIC PERFORMANCE*" on the front cover and the VHS sticker, with a similar message on the back. not sure why i felt like mentioning that but yeah

6:42 For a second I thought he was gonna say "Let's go ahead and throw the disk in the trash"

Did you know that all of these episodes are in the SpongeBob Christmas Blu-ray, but instead of using the DVD master, it uses the VHS master, so it includes the full 1986 Paramount logo and the Nickelodeon “Maze” bumper at the start.

The PG rating is from Canada, American releases for shows usually were never rated in the US , WB usually marks it as NOT RATED. Each Canadian rating has a colour, G is green, PG is blue, 14A is yellow and 18A is red

The original painty the pirate painting is actually pretty small and doesn’t have a mouth on it. You were correct about that big one being a copy.
-
I cried seeing Stephen Hillenburg's signature...
-
15:04 Maybe the voice lines were real, filmed in the moment, but that's just not the take they used in the episode.
-
I just watched the dvd yesterday with the nephew for the first time in years. The menu page of scenes playing out in the background for 4 secs was ahead of its time.
-
Fun fact, a year after It’s a SpongeBob Christmas released on DVD they released a Blu-ray version that contained everything from Nautical Nonsense and SpongeBuddies. It had all the special features and even had the vintage Paramount and Nickelodeon logos at the beginning of the bonus episodes.
-
Also there is a error on the Something Smells episode of where Spongebob says "Hi, Building!" it winds up with Spongebob reusing "I just don't get it!".
-
I believe I still have this DVD. As far as I'm aware, this was actually SpongeBob's first DVD release, and for a while, I was collecting pretty much every SpongeBob DVD that came out, during the height of my obsession with the show.
-
It’s interesting that nautical nonsense and sponge buddies were released separately on VCD
-
3:28 Why was the sound spongebob made so funny to me 😭
-
The alternate voice linereads were probably recorded in the same session as the ones they actually used in the episode as another possible take.
-
I had that DVD growing up. It was the doorway into my adoration for SpongeBob at the time. Had I never got that disc, I would’ve never wanted to see the movie, in the movie theatre, on opening day.

for the painty bit, NLE video editing did exist in 1999 so they could have used the 4’ painting without much issue
