Recovery During A Flash Flood

Published 2024-07-30
We got a call for a broken Gladiator in Pritchett Canyon. The call came in right before the time for the flash flood warning so it was definitely a race. We got in there quick but unfortunately the customer couldn't find his lug nut key. That slowed progress but then the storm hit. We ended up taking cover under a rock overhang and waiting for the rain to pass. After the rain slowed I had Shawn run back to the shop to get a lug nut key. Then we got the balljoints pressed back in and everything back together. We didn't have an axleshaft so we had to come out in rear wheel drive only. Everything went fairly smooth and we actually missed the worst parts of the storm. Thank you everyone for watching and supporting us.

Just so everyone knows. The 4 wheel drive was working. However without both front shafts(we removed the broken one) the LOCKERS wouldn't engage because of a damaged ABS sensor so no power would go to the passenger front. That was why it was technically in 2 wheel drive. The front driveline was spinning, but it had nowhere to go missing one of the front axle shafts.

What on earth was that guy thinking driving his overland Gladiator rock crawler into Pritchett Canyon !!! Was he on some kind of Divorce freedom trip or something??!! And on the day of flash floods. Ohhh wait a minute…..I’m the that guy 😂 And that’s my Truck This experience humbled me BIG TIME After 20 years wheeling I took it to the limit . And got my ass handed to me that day. Thanks To Rory I continued my Bucket list trip out to Colorado. Many thanks to you guys and Paul at Bent Fab for connecting me with you Rory.

3 years ago I got into the offroad community with friends that knew what they were doing. We had a Pre-Moab meeting 6 months before the trip. Most had been there more than once. When it came to scheduling trail days Pritchett was the 1st day. The leader without hesitation pointed at me and said "you're not doing Pritchett". Didn't hurt my feelings at all. He knew my skill level and so did I. Very important not to get in above your head. I have made huge strides since then and value good advise.

These monsoon microburst storms can be terrifying, especially in a boat on Lake Powell or in a canyon. Rory and Shawn stay calm, focused, ride out the rain and complete the recovery in style. Total pros. Kudos!
  • Rory and Shawn, you are so patient with your customer's. Wow is all I can say.

Rory gave me good advice when I stop by with my Gladiator stay out of Pritchett no problem listen to the Pro. 👍
  • Rory is such a PRO!! It's no wonder why he's always in a bad mood, dealing with all of us "off road idiots"!! All love and respect to you boys!!

No idea how that guy expected to do Pritchett in that thing. Know your rig, know your gear and know your experience level and evaluate before doing something stupid. Enough internet bashing - Glad the guy was able to call for help, glad Rory was able to help. Nobody got hurt. It was a learning experience. Hopefully future adventures are safer and more successful.

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night shall stay team trailmater from their appointed duties.!
  • I've been changing ball joints for 50 years and have never had a ball joint come out that easy! One smack with the hammer and it flies out!
  • @marvicty
Rory and Shawn are some real OG's

I remember those storms. It's more like a solid sheet of water coming down than raindrops. Wild. Really interesting to watch as the waterfalls formed. This was an excellent real life demo of what to do and not to do in these storms. Great vid.
  • people always underestimate just how powerful water is in the desert, everything you see, the canyon itself, is because of water! if it's raining be where the water cant get to, good call Rory
  • @OpieDogie
Team trailmater is incredible. In a wash or canyon is the last place you want to be in the desert during a monsoon burst. This shows to go you, know your skill level, know the ground, know your vehicle and know the weather.

That dude got a RORY AND SHAWN wheeling education today!

Glad everyone was safe. Great job guys. Flash floods are no joke. Got to admit though, Rory taking shelter in the ONE spot where it drips, that was a little funny. Been there, done that. :eyes-pink-heart-shape:
  • Impresive driving to Rory. People don't know how much experience it takes to know where his tires are and the towed vehicles tires are in relation to bumps, rocks, clift, and when NOT to give gas, and when to. So stuff doesn't get broken.
