Shelly em Smart Energy Monitor | Installation

Published 2023-08-22
How to connect your Shelly em smart energy monitor to your home consumer unit (fuse box). Powering the Shelly em from a dedicated power outlet and housing the Shelly in a plastic junction box this provides professional installation that has easy access if needed. The cables to the energy monitoring units and power supply were terminated using ferules. See my other videos in the series to find out how.

Shelly EM is a Wi-Fi-operated energy meter with contactor control. It allows you to simultaneously monitor the consumption of any home appliances, electric circuits, and office equipment (lights, power lines, security systems, heating, cooling, etc.) in 2 circuits on the same phase or individually. Shelly EM is perfect for measuring solar energy production, monitoring household consumption, and controlling heavier-load appliances.

Hi Pete, just found your channel looking at Shelly EM stuff! I have one on order, together with some electrical gear, as I want to monitor my solar generation and EV charger for use with Home Assistant (long story but my solar provider is NOT HA friendly!) - Shelly EM is one of the units HA actually recommend, so I went for it… 👍🏻 Thank you for your clear and concise videos on the Shelley EM, which I found very useful for my upcoming install - you have earned a new sub, thanks again… 😉

What MCB could I power the shelly from? I've got a spare Hager MTN 106 B6 spare unsed (meant to be for alarm), could I use this one?

I've been looking for something like this for ages. I've got a holiday let with a hot tub that runs 24/7. During winter, my monthly energy bills routinely top £700+ and I want to get a better understanding of how much and when the tub is consuming energy to see if I can adjust filter times, etc. So am I right in saying all I do with this is just connect one of the clamps to the hot tub circuit coming out of the RCB? Great videos on it, I spent ages looking for a UK review of this kit!
  • Thanks for the update, am jealous how neat your work is as mine never looks tidy lol
  • Hi Pete. Id like to have seen the wiring in your consumer unit to power the Shelley but anyhow I need to monitor one circuit which charges an electric car through a domestic 3 pin plug. Does the Shelley EV clamp around the positive tail coming from the MCB for that radial circuit because the wire is only 2.5mm and the clamp looks far too big for that size of live wire?
