I come from a mid-sized town (many would say small) that has a college really well-known for its Japanese foreign exchange program… and the old white couple thing really bothered me. Or just “friendly white people” being made out to be weird. I’m from the Midwest. We’re known for smiling and waving at strangers when we pass by on the streets. It’s just how it is here. And most people are honestly genuine about it. I hope that the Japanese students that come here for school don’t think like Uki… it just makes me sad that he seemingly has such a generalized negative view…

I love when people say hello to me, it reminds me that I exist. Uki’s “everyone in small towns is racist and trying to get in my business cause I’m Asian” is such a bad take. Places like that definitely exist, racism is everywhere and pointed at everyone, but if an old couple just says hello, it means they’re saying hello. It’s intended to brighten someone else’s day

I’ll be entirely honest, I’ve always wanted to enjoy watching Uki’s streams and wanted to like him whole heartedly, he has some pretty chill streams and is rather funny. But honestly, I’m a white female and a lot of the time I feel really unwelcomed in his community, I know that there’s the possibility that he’s joking, and that I “shouldn’t take it too seriously”, but then I think about my students (I work at a school) and I think about how horrible it would be for me to tell my students to “not take it seriously” if they heard those kinds of comments from someone they admire, or god forbid, someone in their class. It just really rubs me the wrong way.
