1976 Rover P6 3500 Auto - Part 1 - Intro

Published 2024-06-10
A new project car! When I saw this one I had to have it. I had a P6 at 14 years old, and have a lot of fond memories, they're one of the main reasons I love classic cars as much as I do. In this video we'll have a look round the car and work out what we've let ourselves in for.

  • The Rover P6 what a car my father owned one back in the 70s I loved it first car I learnt to drive in it was a 2000 TC it was a beautiful red colour when I got my driving licence then I went out and bought myself a Rover P6 V8 and my father gave his in and he bought himself a V8 as well those cars bring back memories my late father really enjoy them
  • P6 Rims are expensive and difficult to source because of the stud pattern. P5 Rostyles needs work done to the arches, if I remember right. I would keep the Wolfrace's, as even a good set of steels will set you over £700. The front isn't load bearing but I would check the engine crossmember to make sure it's true. Otherwise, that's going to a beautiful P6 when it's done. I've had a '69 P6 V8 for 15 years now, love it.

A friend of my Family had a ( hearing Aid) ) beige V8 P6 , so have some happy memories of them 😁, and regarding the alloys, they kinda remind me of spoke wheels at a distance, so would personally keep them as something a bit different from every other P6 🤔 . .

I have always loved the Rover P6.Hope everything goes to plan for you.
  • I actually like the period alloys wheels so would keep them. Plus the police spats at the front are quite rare so again I would keep them on too. I would concentrate on getting her back together and perhaps spending the money on the interior? Looks like a great project and looking forward to to future videos!

Back in the 80s these were so undervalued you could pick these up for a few hundred pounds they were never triumph stag or tr6 money so it's nice to them now at good money. I've had a few in my time from ground up restoration I was finding that getting good interior and trims harder even at auto jumbles where the parts were as bad as the ones I had. But there are still specialist out there. I still have a load of p6 monthly magazine from the p6 owners club. Good luck in the p6 restore. I will follow with interest I now drive a Rover 75 which I love but again they are so underrated and like the p6 was undervalued. This was my last one in the picture.

You don't often find a P6 with little rust. That would be a keeper for me.

Those alloys are hideous! Looks like a great project.

Phil's a little economical with the origin story on GKU 916N.... I'm walking round our local scrappy, and a lorry was arriving with two Rover P6's on. One white, one green. One was a 2200, one looked like a V8 - but had a busted bonnet catch and no badges so the 'yoof' in the yard couldn't tell for sure. "How much?" I ask. £100 for the green one, £50 for the tatty looking white one. "Got any V8's in?" No. Okay... Got home. No Phil, there's no Jags in there. Two Rovers though. "Ooh." The first problem is he has £20 left to his name from washing cars this week. As dutiful brother, I thought I'll give him £30, lets sit back and see what happens now! Well, as mentioned, Phil bought the white V8 and hid it at work for a few weeks, then got told it had to be shifted or it would be moved for him (and not very gently) with a forklift. So a plan was concocted, based on our parents telling him if he got a car he had to find somewhere for it. Somewhere being anywhere that didn't involve cost to them or getting involved with something where the oxide to metal ratio went the wrong way well over 25 years ago. Off they went on holiday for a few days. (Can't remember. Rome or somewhere.) They arrived back home to find the garden pond all 14ft x 6 ft deep complete with Koi carp) has been relocated 8 ft to the left, hard core laid where it used to be, and the nastiest sounding dirtiest looking Rover you've ever seen parked proudly on this newly added driveway. Cue one utterly knackered teenager - looking for all the world like he spent the last few days drilling an oil well - being summoned to explain to Dad exactly what he had done to the garden, the pond, and why. Dad was a politician, and its not often he lost an argument. However, Phil stood patiently ticking off on his fingers all the criteria that had been given to him about having a classic car, which he had diligently followed almost to the letter, leaving Dad completely lost for words.. ..and me in fits of giggles.

I owned your P6 from 1995 to 2001, I was the second owner. Look forward to seeing you restore her to her former glory.

A friend had a Lunar Grey 2200TC in the late seventies. A lovely car. The alloys aren't great, definitely go with the rostyles. My first car was a '67 2000SC. It was white so everyone thought it was a police car.
