4:48 in the original concept art for storm troopers, they all had those cylinder shapes on their belts because originally, all storm troopers carried light sabers. Those are light saber holsters, but they looked so cool, they left them on, even after they decided they wouldnt carry lightsabers. The main reason they didnt follow through on that idea was the sfx for lightsabers was so time consuming in post production, they decided it would just be easier to just have Vader and Obi wan to have them instead. Lightsabers would have been like pocket knives in star wars, if the technology to make them in post had been as cheap in the 70s as it is now.
