  • Another super topic, Lei! Two things clarified for me ... the Japanese term shishigara and why the Japanese keep calling their oranda fish varieties Dutch :) Once again I find myself in a conundrum of form and function over proportion and adornment. The size and shape of the various head growths and how the fish actually functions as a fish. In most cases the two seem to be in sync but since these growths are essentially benign tumours they do continue to grow as the fish age. Some of the older fish do become encumbered with age and rarely swim well in come cases. I see similarities here and with fin length ... long find early in life in details leads to fish that actually get anchored in place by their tails because their musculature can longer move their tails to swim. Is there a remedy? Is there a place for good breeding principles that speak to the long history of aesthetic theory in fish culture from both the historic and even modern Chinese and Japanese artistic movements?

  • This is another favorite show! Thank you so much for the detail, information and structure. Goldfish docus could not be better. Applause. Thank you. Your question at 2:20 feels to me like a multiple question and I give my reasons. A: As correct as classifications can be. B: Left IS an eggfish, but ONLY in type like a Ranchu, NOT in breed, thus the small 'e'. The specimen on the right IS Lionhead, but here JUST in wen type AND at the same time Oranda in breed. C: Right is an Oranda, yes. BOTH can be Lionheads in terms of wen type for as long AS it's met from the Oranda's side. It's not much of an option for the breed that crowns the name, the Lionhead. D: I do care and both are stunning specimens. The term 'Lionhead' refers to an old breed AND (seperately) a wentype for other breeds. To me it's important to get that straight and out there. From my understanding is the Lionhead breed fixed and doesn't have variations, pretty much one standard look with more emphasis on the wen. Orandas can have different body, tail and wen types. Where the two breeds meet is where Orandas have been bred to have a typical, full and spherical wen just like the Lionhead. In this respect is the diverse Oranda a very versatile and flexible breed. As for the Dutch, the Oranda breed is called "Leeuwenkop" (say- Lay- wen- kop) at all universal martkets, which translates to 'Lionhead'. This laziness irritates me everytime. Collectivelly are the Ranchu breed and Lionhead breed called "Buffelrug" (say- 'Buhfell- roug', which translated to Buffalobacks, also at universal markets. So incorrect because they were never bred to just look the same! Only the true enthousiasts, keepers and those who have done the research and very limited specialist stores know these things correctly. There are physical even minor differences between Orandas, and the eggfish (dorsal-less) breeds: Lionheads, Shukin, Eggfish, Nankin, Chinese Pompons, and Ranchus. At the petstore it's skill when one can personally notice a single Lionhead in a group of Ranchus. I have questions: I would like to know how it first all came to be with our Fancy goldfish. How exactly did the Telescope and Celestial get those eyes? What is inside a Pearlscale that makes it so spherical and the scales to have this type as opposed to the usual? How were double/twin tails created? What caused the mutations? Are there new breeds with exotic looks being bred to be consistent now?
  • @techo205
Really great stuff as per usual....
  • Brilliant video!! I love the history of the goldfish explained into this detail. I hope you will do more on goldfish history. Thank you 🙏

Hello dear Lei , interesting this complete analysis on the history of the origin of the name of the Oranda and Lion's Head. I have always wondered when seeing certain statues of the Guadian Leono of the Temples if they had anything to do with the inspiration of this name. I did not know the origin but I find this journey to the origin very interesting thanks to your explanations of the ancient manuscripts and drawing boards. I also find the differences and the history of these selections between China and Japan very interesting. The literature you have shown us is very helpful in understanding everything, and it is amazing to see these ancient texts and drawings. The difference between the lion's head and in Ranchu is also very good.I did not know the etymology of the name Oranda linked to the Dutch. You are always super professor!
