Steve Burns served as the host of Blue's Clues from its first episode in 1996 until he decided to quit six years later in 2002. As the beloved host of the children's show, Steve was the amiable dog-parent to Blue, a spotted dog with a penchant for leaving clues around their home. But after 100 episodes, Steve left for college and let his on-screen brother Joe take over. And while Donovan Patton's Joe was a serviceable host, people couldn't help but wonder about the real reason Steve Burns left Blue's Clues.

Bizarre rumors surfaced about drug abuse, death, or just simply wanting to follow his dreams of being a musician. And while he did go and form a band, the rest of the reports were untrue. So, exactly why did he leave Nickelodeon for greener pastures? Watch the video to learn why Steve quit Blue's Clues!

  • As a kid, I was sad to see Steve leave the show but I'm glad to see that he's still working.
  • @barbiquearea
So his career has essentially come full circle. Neat.

Who else is here after Steve made us cry telling us he's proud of us after so many years 😭
  • This man was my childhood. I always loved his episodes and missed him when he left. But I'm glad to know that he is still well.

Damn I remember watching this as a kid and actually cried seeing him leave, mostly cuz Blue Clues . I was a dog person growing up and just imagine how sad Blue was seeing his owner go fulfill his life without him by his side.

I was today years old when I found out Steve performed the theme for Young Sheldon.
  • @ThePow1er
The fact that he returned to the show after so long is so perfect. His character in the show came full circle
  • I remember watching Blue's Clues when I was a kid and when Steve left in 2002, I never saw the show again. I truly felt that since we all love Steve, he was like a brother to all of us. I never did watch Joe much, Steve will always be remembered when he hosted Blue's Clues in 1996. I'll never forget when I first watched Blue's Clues in 1997.
  • Blue’s Clues was such an important part of my childhood! I’m glad that children today can still enjoy it!

as a person who loved, I mean loved blue's clues growing up. and someone who really struggles to accepting changes. steve leaving was awful for tiny me. and whenever I found out about blue's clues and you, I was slightly disappointed, how could they continue the show without steve??? and I just didn't watch it and avoided it as much as possible. whenever I was watching tv and eating dinner. it was on, so after all my time avoiding it, I decided to watch it. and honestly, it was good. I liked it, it definitely isn't a favorite because of josh. but it's obvious he has just as much passion steve did. and he is I have to say a wonderful singer.
  • Thankfully it wasn't anything negative that was the reason Steve left. It was his own decision

Damn blues gotta be old if he’s been around this show for 10+ years
  • In a way its wholesome knowing both Steve and Joe returned for cameos in the reboot series. Thats about as good to restart a series as it can get

I'm nearing my late 20s but damn man, seeing Burns involved with the new show and bringing the spirit of it to a whole new generation, knowing that he's involved in its production and has played an adult version of his character in multiple episodes is making me hold back a couple tears. Love that photo of all three hosts from shortest to tallest with Burns crouching in the back, they all look like they're having the time of their life, the new show just seems very heartwarming. Him starting to lose his hair at 29 has me a bit worried about myself, heh, but hey if that were me I would have just started wearing wigs and kept rolling with the show a bit longer. It's awesome he's had such a great career after the original show, and it always makes me happy seeing people just embrace their roots, so many children's performers get needlessly self-conscious and go way out of their way to distance themselves. Not this guy though, and I really, really respect him for that.

Oh I’ll never forget how sad my youngest daughter was when Steve left for college. I thought her heart would break.
  • @CelebrityHeart
I'm 28 and I remember watching this show staring Steve, then Joe alot when I was little.

As a child I kept waiting for him to return..... He never did 😭
