I try out gecko tape (AKA nano tape, alien tape etc.) to see if it can be used to climb walls like a Gecko.

We need a part two to this video. You need the right mechanics.

Seems like he would’ve potentially have been able to climb up if he had more upper body strength and somehow made sure his hands wouldn’t slide out of his gloves. A professional rock climber or someone else with crazy good upper body strength could in theory use this to climb up smooth surfaces.
  • Hi, I'm from Portugal, I study biology and I love watching your videos. There are a few ways to get around some of the flaws in the experience. If you have your back to the wall and your arms down, not only are you in a more comfortable position (without your face crushed against the wall), but you also prevent your hands from escaping the glove and you can use the soles of your feet (instead of from the sides) because you can bend your legs.

For a fun summer science project, I actually had the same idea, and had about the same success. The two biggest things I encountered were: 1. Keeping the hands in the gloves and 2. Keeping the surface clean. I touched the hood of my buddy's car with it, and it stuck really well but even that thin layer of dust made it not work afterwards at all, even with the self-cleaning. So if you could somehow find a way to keep the gloves on and keep the pads clean enough to work but still be versatile enough to use consistently, then you might be golden.

,,With great contact points comes great stickability."
  • Nano-tapes are my go to for mounting stuff. Strong, and comes off cleanly. Never knew there was so much science behind it.
  • Consider having the tape on knees and larger areas of the body. It's really something you and JLaserVideo have to cooperate on :))

do some body building, we need part 2, or you may get a child to do it as they have less weight and more energy to climb

You should try and climb the corner of an outside wall, it might be a more comfortable position. Finding a way to keep those gloves from coming off may be challenging though.

This actually seems very plausible. I think the main problem here is more about the nanotape being very poorly integrated into and supported by the suit than the adhesion not being strong enough. If it was woven into the material and you had really good strappings to distribute the weight properly I think this would work fine. You would need to use a very different and methodical way of climbing, so it would probably require some practise to utilize fully too. I dont foresee people climbing up buildings like spiderman anytime soon, but I can totally see this being used to enhance climbing gloves, or even some work gloves. Usually these rely on rubber to enhance friction to prevent slipping - but this anti-shear adhesion seems way more powerful. This material is sure to have lots of usecases outside of just tape. It doesnt seem to be very expensive on a cursory search, so I think I might have to give this a try.

We definitely need a part 2, this is an amazing concept!

This is one of the lots of your experiments which I'm actually really interested! Van der waal force is really fascinating!! And you explained everything in a way I understood pretty easily. A tape that can stick strongly, and can be easily peeled off, that tape is awesome.
  • @donamills
I really like that your videos are things to "regular average" person can do. No lab needed or super expensive equipment. Just silly cool science stuff. 👍
  • I remember my professor explaining this to me, it was fascinating. Thank you for having brought me back those memories. Always quality contenent on your channel!
  • The problem wasn't the tape but the gloves themselves and your hands wanting to slip out Appling a uneven force transfered into a peeling motion. Still truly interesting. If done correctly it looks like it could easily hold you as a spiderman. But, could your muscles Is the next question lol
  • @polyspiel
You could more easily do this on a corner. Then both inside of legs can touch the wall and stay adhered.
  • @Zeero3846
Now I'm sure many of the engineering channels are up for the challenge of creating special gloves and shoes for gecko tape wall climbing.

Your videos are amazing I love the little experiments you do and the way you explain the topics, keep up the good work and have a good time making videos! I sure have a good time when I’m watching them. 👍
