Are orbital railways justified? | Justified

Published 2022-06-09
Justified episode 3 explores whether orbital railway systems have justification in various of cities. Melbourne's suburban rail loop in particular faced some harsh criticisms over its rushed development. In this video we have a look at other systems and see the positives and negatives of an orbital railway system, to see whether Melbourne's loop is worth its high costs. It looks at improvements to the current design and gives other cities teachings on how to produce a successful orbital system.

  • Nice work, I do agree that it would be sensible to reduce some costs from SRL but the simple reality is downgrading it to a tram or something would make it far less useful and would probably have a significantly reduced ridership. So the best of both worlds is to try to reduce costs on the SRL where possible but still ensuring it is built properly and also future proofed.

Nice to see this channel return to life! Just as good as always. Something interesting is that the Bankstown line in Sydney used to be a big (albeit rather deflated) loop, heading down the Main Suburban line.
