Maria Joao Pires - Discovering Sound
Hidden in the depths of the Portuguese country, pianist Maria Joao Pires's house and intriguing cultural centre is located, which attracts young talents and renowned musicians from far and wide. Pires deliberately established the place far beyond the reach of the official music business, to be able to propagate her passion for art, music and life according to her personal views. So, she gives classes according to her personal artistic principles, assisted by other teachers. To the piano sounds of composers like Chopin, Schubert, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Brahms and one or two modern composers, Discovering Sound draws a portrait of both the centre and the pianist herself. The virtuoso piano player elucidates her distinct ideas, teaches, organises an in-house concert and bakes bread. `When you're very successful, you become isolated. Here in Belgais, I'm at home.'

DISCOVERING SOUND is a film about Belgais: the home and arts center of the world famous Portuguese pianist Maria João Pires. From all parts of the world artists and students visit her farm in rural Portugal to follow master classes from Pires and other teachers. Over the years her skeptical attitude towards the concept of art, based on competition, ambition and promotions, with all it’s displays of egocentricity, has led her to create a world in which there is space to develop her own ideas. This film is a portrait of this intimate and secluded place where Pires can live and work according to her own artistic principles. In this sense ‘Discovering Sound ’ is also a portrait of the pianist herself. We learn about her pronounced opinions and views on art and life and how these two are undeniable entwined. Most importantly we experience the ravishing passion with which she teaches and creates.

the most importand Portuguese pianist of all time, one of the best ever in the world
  • thank you for sharing...this document is magical, beautiful, inspiring, full of wisdom, muses all around, the world is a much better place with maria joao..., at 44,10 she says to a student...." SOUND ! SING !, DON´T BE AFRAID OF YOUR VOICE,  YOUR VOICE IS NICE, I LIKE YOUR VOICE, GO...AND GO...NO STOP...YOU HAVE YOUR SECRET THERE, INSIDE." Pires gives us her secrets, her love, like an invisible saint, like an angel.

Most want to be known, seek fame and to have power. Looking at Maria ‘s teaching this wave of musicians . They all are dead. For they must feel poverty and embrace the suffering which is the cross. The cross is our salvation! Thank you Maria for your gifted music!
  • How wonderful! I am learning so much from watching her play and instruct others. My former piano teachers were not professional musicians. They didn't know these techniques. ❤
  • Some of her words are just gold in these days. A shame not so many are listening.
  • Magnifique document.
  • This film is so beautiful Thank you for sharing. I love her so much.
  • Watching her play the Shostakovich piece shows she gets it . Its not just quarter notes its a folk rocking rythm insistent ,comical and quasi -sinister carnival fare .If only we ad her in Prokofiev and ligeti this woman has traveled so far .she doesn' t or hasn't recorded a great deal and Ive seen no contemporary music from her .I imagine at the Beethoven competition she had to play someting contemp .I nowknow she can do anything at the piano .Her philosophy is all encompassing .The true celebrities in music are so deep into human experience I dont think any of us can criticize them .They don't even live in the same world. She talks about everyday life ,cleans house is so real and deep I realize the life of a classical musician can be for very few .
  • Thank you for sharing this. What a wonderful Personality: she has understood wisdom practically, the true wisdom of love-sharing, of humility whilst letting one's personality expressing through the music. Take the time to breath in, breath out, move your whole body and sing whilst playing the piano...I would have loved to have Maria Joao Pires as a teacher!
  • Um só artista português com sucesso no exterior que tenha sido amado e acarinhado em Portugal, um só... Que fado este :(

Thanks for sharing this! It is an invaluable gift to humanity, especially appreciated during our times of bigotry and falsity.
  • I love this. We are all the same and just human! I hate thus cult of the 'musician ' or 'star' we are all valuable un our human way.
  • everyone hear, see, understand, what is ready to his perception. I love her because she told me " Any problem you or me can have in our lifetime is nothing compared to a child without school "
