In this video I will measure the alcohol content of two different wines by distillation and using careful volume and density measurements.
No hydrometer is used with method.

  • Hi Perry, Thanks for that - it got me started. I obtained the same setup as you, and used it about 7 times to make measurements/calcs. I compared hand-calcs, tables, and phone app calcs for determining % vol alcohol. When i factored-in temperature adjustments, the results diverged. Then as i looked-into the tolerances and errors more, i realized it's easier to first ensure both the 100mL wine sample and 100mL distilled/distilled-watered sample are both as close to 20C (or whatever value in tables) as possible. Next step is calculations show that using the volumetric flask toerance of +/-.1mL and then tolerance if my ability to hit the fill line of +/- 1 drop (=.05 mL), causes the final % vol/vol alcohol tolerance to be very large (tesult raned from ~ 11.5 to 13.5%). I lookedconline to know all methods used, and found that pynchometer is used instead of volumetric flask (can be for both wine and distilled sample), and this is temperature-controlled using water-bath to +/- .1C. I now purchased those things. I haven't checked/calculated tolerance on those yet, but use self-cal on the volume using the same water you use for distillation topping. The fill tolerance on the pynchometer is probably .01 drop or so. The biggest tolerance now may be water bath temperature and .001 g scale. I just wanted to share these with you because i appreciate your youtube, and it looks like you like chemistry as i do too. I will reply again later with tolerancing after to try it. Cheers. Jim
  • @londemon
Thanks for you video, was very useful
  • Can I ask how long should be done for distillation
  • Hi Perry, Thank you for your video, I’m not professional. I don't understand why did you take 100ml flask and What is it reason? Maybe I Could take 150ml or 200ml flask and so on... is it accurate? I appreciate it. Jet
  • Hello, my dear friend, where can I download your sheet?
  • Dear sir, How much time (hours) does it take to complete the distillation?
  • We did this experiment but we diluted the wine. Is there a reason for that?
  • Okay, that's just WAY too much work... Why not just use a hydrometer?
