HELLO FRIENDS!! It's time for my annual bath - and for such an occasion, we decided to travel to most famous geothermal spa in Iceland - the Blue Lagoon. I've been wanting to unleash an international spa travel series for a long time - so here is my formal declaration: it's spa time, baby!

So this past January, as the first installment of a 3-part Nordic/Scandinavian travel trip, we journeyed to the beautiful, mineral-rich light blue waters of the Blue Lagoon - to soak, smoothie, and face mask, oh my. Will this magical lagoon keep my skin plump and youthful forever? Or will the lava rock exfoliate my face right off? Who knows!

Quick note - we mentioned that the Reykjanes lava field was 800 years old - I think it's actually much, much older than that - but the earliest recorded eruption was about 800 years ago (which is where our fact came from)!

Also, because I've seen a few comments about it - no, the cups at the lagoon bar are not glass! They are plastic.

I'm a geologist, so when Safiya said "I love rocks" I felt that

Tyler’s application of the face masks is giving sunscreen vibes 😂 I could not stop laughing

saf and ty really are living out my childhood dream of fiddling around as many hotel rooms and shower settings as possible
  • @safiyashorts
legend has it I’m still relaxed to this day 🧖🏻‍♀
  • I still suggest Safiya and Tyler to go to BonBonLand in Denmark. Its a candy theme park, with some pretty weird things in. I think they would love it

the Monday after this came out, one of my students (8th grade) randomly brought up hot springs and I was like "did you just watch the new Safiya video about Iceland" and she was like "lol yes" and we just looked at each other, a beautiful cross-generational moment realizing we subscribe to the same stuff

I feel Safiya and Tyler have the perfect personalities for travel videos. Laid-back but informative
  • I just love that it's runoff from clean energy production. It just feels so earth friendly and I love it.
  • As an Icelander I’d say bathing and swimming and being in water is a very big part of our culture and social life I guess. The blue lagoon isn’t that big of a deal to most people in Iceland, we just know how to profit of tourists :)
  • As an icelandic person that lives in iceland, i have been noticing recently a lot of people on youtube coming here and going to the blue lagoon and like a typical icelandic person i feel like nobody ever knows we exists (even though they do) so this kind of excites me. Thanks for visiting my country ☺️ Þið eruð velkomin aftur hvenær sem er!

I'm 48 and Icelandic, from Reykjavik. When I was a kid, probably around 10 or so, so around 1985, the blue lagoon was pretty new. I developed some skin condition on the soles of my feet and was "prescribed" by my family physician to go bathe in the lagoon as the benefit for Psoriasis patients had already been established. At the time, the lagoon was right next to the Svartsengi power plant and not so far away from it as it is now. The changing room facilities was a literal shed with 3 showers and hangers for 10-15 people or so. This place has come a long way since then. Now I don't recommend anybody to go there as it's pricey as hell for going to a geothermal pool in Iceland. Reykjavik alone has 16 such pools to visit, all of them with a selection of hot tubs and even saunas as well. Price of entry there: 1/10th of the Blue Lagoon cost. Safiya and Tyler, if you ever make it back to Iceland I'd love to take you around and show you some nice sights...

The fact I've been watching Saf for so long that I literally cannot say "alright" without saying it exactly like she does lmao
  • @whompers4878
Can’t you tell that safiya knows how to put on a face mask and tyler doesn’t 💀
  • I praise Tyler for making a Journey to the Center of the Earth reference. Such a banger movie.

This is such a coincidence! I'm writing a term paper on geothermal resources and how humans use them. I had to mention the blue lagoon in it. Fun fact about sulfur: it is proven to help treat skin diseases like eczema and psoriasis. I referenced a couple of medical journals for it. Iceland sits on top of the Mid Atlantic ridge (a divergent plate boundary) which is what causes all of the geothermal activity. There's all this magma rising up from beneath the crust to create more. The magma reacts with the water and Chemical reactions happen. One of which is the precipitation of sulfur

As a wheelchair user, I’m happy to see those hotels were all accessible, even the showers! That’s rare for hotels
