This is my take on a DIY Canister filter, it's not the final design but it's a good illustration of the direction I'm leaning towards. It’s a derivative of a design I saw on DIY Aqua Pros YouTube Channel

How cool ... putting pump on the outflow to avoid siphon starting hassle. Thank you and best wishes!

Nice concept. One thing I would absolutely change in your design, though, is I would put the ball valve into the return line, rather than the intake line. This simulates head pressure and is far better for the pump. Putting the valve before the pump can cause cavitation at the impeller (effectively starving the pump of water), and premature pump failure is a definite possibility. As far as flow is concerned, this modification to your design will be unnoticeable. Either way, great work! If you get a chance. check out my nano sump video and let me know what you think!

glad I found this video. That walmart canister is virtually identical to the container my flour comes in and I have been eyeing it off as a future canister filter lol. Others in Australia, its the 'Healthy Baker' brand flour (at Safeway/Woolworths, unsure if Coles/IGA has it but they probably do!). If you need flour anyway, then you can reuse the container for other things (I use for sugar/pasta etc) and soon will try as a canister filter...why not :P

I love how u made its smlled it showed me exactlh what i wanted for my 20 long crab tank and how to do it all
  • Bubbles coming through the filter is fine, in fact it's great, helps oxygenate the water.

ill be doing this then ahah great video ... best thing my aquarium sits on a big oak stand and there is a cupboard underneath and it will all fit nicely in there and a few rubber pads to stop any motor vibration plus the motor wont work too hard as the work is being done by gravity then the little nit of work it will do is push the water up into the tank ... i saw a flaw in someones design they put the pump first so it had to push all the water into the reservoir ... on my pump i may put a small pc fan with a 5v supply just to help keep the motor cool ..... one big question if i made my reservoir with alot of thought would it be a good idea to put the heater in there fully submerged ?

Hey Mark, What Power head you have used in there? Do they work properly outside water? Which Brand and Model it is? I want to make the same DIY canister as you.

Nice and clear bro, because you can see through. But if...the pump stop running or if you close the valve, is the water still come down from the intake? And what the other extra end cap on the leat for?
  • dont you need any media in the canister or some kind of fillter floss?
  • @camvlog5400
Nice idea its not like other the pump suck the water from tank .in this way the water flow in pump is clean ..

you can check out my video i have a very nice deign of a canister with a pump in it. but i don't have a detail video of making it. i wish to make a video of making it one day. for leaking i use hot glue to all connect pipe but before it touch water.
