In today’s video, I go for a run down Sandmine Rd., which is a BLM dispersed boondocking area for dry camping outside the small town of Overton, NV. Run with me as I explore this desert road out in the middle of nowhere, eventually ending at the edge of the Lake Mead Recreation area.
This is a beautiful location, with a great view down into the Moapa Valley and the mountains beyond, as well as a view of the confluence of the Virgin and Muddy Rivers. It’s nearby the Valley of Fire State Park, the north entrance of the Lake Mead Recreation area, St. Thomas ghost town, and the Lost City Museum. It’s only a mile from Snowbird Mesa (aka Poverty Flats), and much less populated. The sign at the entrance of Sandmine Rd. says 4x4 recommended, but the road through the camping area is excellent, no sand, rocks, or potholes. You can find spaces suitable for any size rig. You will need 4x4 to go into the canyon or past the end of the camping areas, however. Campsites along the main road go in for 1.2 miles, with mostly small canyon rim sites on the left and much larger sites to the right. After the last site, the road goes down a hill and becomes 4x4 only with some parts washed out. A right fork off the main road at the power lines has one large site and then ends at a locked gate. There’s a right turn off the main road at 1.1 miles, with a few sites followed by a “Property Boundary. No motorized vehicles” sign at 0.3 miles”.
