Einstein once said a smart man learns from his mistakes, but a wise man learns from another’s

I learned while tightening a tank is equally tighten until the rubber seal makes contact, then tighten each side by rock the bowl until it rocks very little.

The pride you feel when fixing things is priceless.
  • Whats fun is when the flat head part of the screw rusts up and you can't get a grip and have to cut the bolts.

First time I did that I did the same thing, I over tightened and cracked the tank. After that I found the correct way to dial it in and never made that mistake again. You almost have to make that mistake to never do it again, it's a rite of passage!

I cracked a bowl and stripped the plastic threads on two brand new lav faucets the same day when i first started out. I still feel terrible to this day for it but hey, they didn't tell me shit. They like to not tell you anything and let you fuck it up so they get to look great without doing anything. 8 years later I'm running my own truck in the company working alone and i rarely make mistakes like that anymore. Im not gonna say i don't ever because i have a toilet to do tomorrow after i run a drain machine down the vent on a rooftop and if i say i don't do stuff like that anymore then I'll do it tomorrow

So refreshing seeing a professional plumber install a compression fitting wothout pipe dope.
  • i never did that, my big fuck up was during my first month.... Me and my mentor went to a new remodeled house to change a faucet.. so my job was to carry tool bags and run to the truck for any unexpected tools or parts.. for some reason I carried in purple primer and the glue.. As he was under the sink i got all the tools out that i thought he needed and ended up tipping over the full can of purple primer, and considering i didnt check the lid, this was bad.. well, it was bad, i dumped a quarter of a can of purple primer on a newly finished hardwood floor... i soaked up what i could with our rags and when we left it ended up being a 12 inch×12inch area of purple on their floor..So i told the main boss and he was not happy and by the time he got there to look at it, it spread to a 6 foot by 6 foot area.. so he had to replace their new hardwood...He didnt fire me but he always hated me after that...7 yrs later, Im a licensed plumber and i run my own small plumbing company..never took purple primer into another finished house again and i tell my guys to never under ANY circumstances take purple primer into a finished house.....and he still brings it up when i see him at the supply house.

I like those new adjustable overflows no need to cut.

I had to do a rebuild like this a few months. At first it was a bit intimidating as I knew nothing about the parts in a toilet. But I followed the instructions with the rebuild kit and watched videos like this one and it turned out rather easy to do. I decided to replace the hose and the stop valve. I remember one plumber said that's what he did since he was putting a guarantee for all his work.

Brother plumbers like that teach the best I was taught through generation to generation and family was harder to learn from than some amazing mentors industrial commercial and residential plumbing

Had frozen pipes a few yrs ago. So for a couple days I was roughing it to get by. I was using the bath tub water spout which was not frozen to fill a pitcher to I used to fill the toilet tank. One early morning still half asleep I accidentally used hot water and cracked the toilet tank. Apparently the tank was so cold the warm water shocked it. While the crack was super fine and hard to see it was enough to leak.

Appreciate the encouraging words brother. I've been an apprentice for 3 months now. Made a couple mistakes, only thousands more to go.
  • Did the same thing about 6 years old. My mom literally lost her shiiiiaat. Dad couldn't stop laughing 🤷
