The region which is today, the State of New york has in the past gone by many names,

Before the Eureopean invasion of the area, the landscape used to be under the control of a unique coalition of native tribes known as the IROQUOIS confederacy.

Made up of several native tribes like the Mohawk, Oneida,Cayuga and Seneca,

They coesxisted and created a complex system of organized society, based on Agriculture, trade and warfare for many years before encountering any foreigners.

And even when they encountered the invading Europeans they fought hard for many years to defend their territories and eventually created alliances with the colonist and invaders at some point in history.

The first Europeans however, to contact the lush and fertile region,
that would become New york was the Dutch in the year 1614 ,it was they who would build Fort Nassaua in present day Albany

The territory was Renamed New Netherland, while the present day new york city area was first called New Armstedarm in 1624.

But Dutch control in the area would not last for long as in 1664, the british invaded the territories of New Netherland,. overran by british forces and renamed New york, while new Armstedarm was called new york city.
