Beavers are pretty cool creatures, and while you know they make dams and gnaw down trees, here are some wild facts about beavers you probably didn't know! Join us on SciShow as we explore one of nature's greatest engineers: the amazing beaver!

Special thanks to Dr. Heidi Perryman of www.martinezbeavers.org/ for pointing out some of our photo examples were of nutria, also called coypu, another large aquatic rodent, that is also cute, but not a beaver.

  • Sometimes you say something cool, like talking about that 850 meter long beaver dam, and then you never show a picture of the actual thing.

For years we lived on a lake, and every night my dog would bark for hours and hours. When I moved, the people that now own the house (who don't have a dog) found that beavers started gnawing the back fence posts. I didn't know my dog was fending off the beaver hordes from destroying our fence, loyal companion indeed.

I want to know who picked up a beaver, smelled its ass and said "hey, this smells good. Let's use this for flavoring"

"Some evil scientists have even played the sound of running water near beavers, only to return in the morning to find speakers covered with sticks and leaves..." It's official. I have a new favourite animal. :D

there's a good reason why scishow is my favorite watching nowadays... the material is good and well presented - and sometimes the comments are hilarious. Of course, given the subject matter pretty fertile ground for levity. And I was happy to see someone noted the Wynnona song - Primus. Worth a listen.

"A note about beaver butts- They smell delightful." I'll keep that in mind...

I went to a small technical school in Cambridge and the university's mascot was a beaver.  It's not your typical school mascot like a lion, bear, bulldog or belligerent  leprechaun but beavers were the perfect mascot since they're often referred to as "nature's engineer" :-)
  • lol i love the end description of the beaver. An animal that makes it's habitat more liveable, drops everything to keep its neighborhood safe, and has a bum that smells like desert.
