I never really thought I had a problem with clothing until I was looking into autism. I've never liked tight or slim fitting clothes, and I remember always having to ask my mum to cut labels out of shirts when I was a kid. When I started buying clothes myself I'd buy things that looked good but then found I couldn't wear them for one reason or another (eg, seams, embroidery or logos that cause the inside to be itchy). These days I mostly buy cheap plain t-shirts that don't have labels in them.
  • Tags are the literal bane of my existence the second I get a piece of clothing I have to take off the tag so I can actually wear it

Watching this after I just went from “calm trying to get ready to go on a walk” to “screaming, sobbing, hyperventilating& stomping my feet bc the way my wool sweater felt and I’m so stressed from that, I’m dissociated
  • Only natural fibers on my skin. Preferably multiple layers, like 5 on my torso. Plus I'm pretty much barefoot all the time.
  • Personally I hate the feeling of clothes on my skin - whenever I can I will go without them - when I have to I wear very loose and baggy and not heavy /thick clothes as then I can just about stand them

Thanks for raising awareness of the sensory issues many of us Autistic people have regarding clothes. For me, shirt have sometimes been a big issue. I find tucking them in very uncomfortable and because of the material of shirts I need to have another layer underneath. It was a nightmare at school as they were very strict on having shirts tucked in. I also don't like tops which have embroidery go through to the inside of the shirt, as it can rub on my skin a lot.

My oldest son on the autistic spectrum refuses to change his clothes and does so when he chooses! He says his clothes are soft and comfortable and washed clothes are itchy! We use Arm & Hammer laundry soap pods with fabric softener and Snuggle dryer sheets. Hmm. Sensory Issues are intense!! Worse when he was a child. Patience and the key is to listen to the person with Autism !! Keep posting. Thank you 👍

I honestly wouldn't even know where to start. I've worn the same three outfits for the last two years (I do laundry every day because one of the outfits is to sleep in). I'm dreading the day they're no longer wearable. One of the shirts I wear, I actually have about 10 duplicates of, but the one I like has a factory defect where it's extra long and it's the only one of them I wear now. I have almost daily meltdowns over sensory problems and it combines with my OCD for extra hell. It also makes working nearly impossible because the few things I can stand to wear are not appropriate for work and some days, even my "safe" outfits are horrible. I also hate to NOT have clothes on so there are times when I can do nothing but sit in the shower and cry. Showers make it a little better, but the hot water runs out eventually.

I find tons of stuff scratchy. I don't like if it's too tight or has a tag i can feel.
  • Loose comfortable clothing is my personal preference. Anything to restrictive makes it impossible to focus on anything else but that. Also tags and bulky seams on high waisted leggings because it digs into my stomach and I can’t 🤦🏼‍♀️ I’m more particular about sleep wear because I struggle to sleep.
  • @starrcasm8488
i can relate to the seams on socks thing. like if theres a seam on the toe of my sock and it doesnt fall only on the tops of my toes i cant wear them. it sucks, especially since my siblings sometimes borrow the socks i like and i never get them back :(
  • @alicewright9784
I hate jogging bottoms. I only wear shorts or jeans. I only wear jumpers with zips because I hate bringing it over my head
  • @JadeDragonRaze
Cotton is usually very comfortable and it is also better for the environment than plastic-based fabrics. If cotton doesn't work I suggest trying hemp or bamboo fabric.
  • I have issues with clothing that is scratchy or clingy or static as well. The issue I have as a female is underwear! I can't stand the clingyness of most of the underwear that's around now. I like loose fitting 100% cotton ( as does one of my daughter's ) but it is "impossible" to find?! I can't tell you how much money I have wasted on trying to find these. They advertise 100 % cotton but it then says on the label that it's 2 % elastane which I can feel ; O Have tried Bamboo but it feels to "ewwww" you know that feeling right? Why do company's make underwear for kids & not for adults? I mean do they honestly think those kids are not going to grow up & want to wear the same underwear? These companies are missing out on a population that is in existence now! So if you are reading this & have any influence PLEASE pitch something to make these cotton Underwear available for adults as well PLEASE !!!

Almost everything is scratchy and too rough for me. I once annoyed a hotel into allowing me to purchase their bathrobe because it was so soft and i couldnt leave without it
  • @lifeasandrea280
Thanks for making this video! I absolutely hate wool, cause its so itchy and fluffy. Also as someone on the spectrum with breasts, I have a hard time wearing a regular bra. They are just way too tight and hurt my body, so I try to get ones as comfy as possible.
  • @davnDaum
Fanatic video! Subscribed! The bane of my existence has been contemplating whether to keep my wardrobe totally minimal, so there’s absolutely no brain power being used, or having a lot of option as to fully express myself. Finding that perfect balance between minimal/fashionable has been incredibly difficult.
  • @TheReadingWren
My favourite fabric is corduroy because the texture is so stimmy, and I love bright blocks of colour. But I’m so fussy about the fabric, tightness of the clothes and labels etc.
  • Been rocking my same 3 pairs of skinny jeans since 2006... Helps me feel confident not because i like being so skinny but its the daily habit of tell my anxiety im in control also im i like the stim that comes from them.
