Vocal Coach Analysis: ANGELINA JORDAN at 7, 13 and 17 - an interesting look at her growth!

Published 2023-11-01
I have known about this young lady for a number of years, yet have never done an analysis on her singing. Many of you have also been requesting it, so... here it is!

I thought it would be interesting to compare her singing at different ages. This way one can see what remained the same from the start, and what maybe changed or evolved!

Wow wow wow Angelina Jordan, unique and inexplicable, I always listened to Rock and Heave in my 54 years, and one unforgettable day, more than 5 years ago I heard Angelina for the first time, there everything changed, I never felt anything the same about any type of art She is without a doubt my number one, Angelina gives value to every word, super exciting and without failing to mention her empathy and how wonderful she is as a human being, the same band Queen, congratulated her twice and gave her the rights to her arrangement, something wonderful, thank you very much for your reaction, on some things we do not agree, but that is art, I hope you continue reacting to Angelina, greetings from Argentina and thank you.

I,ve never been a big fan of any singer in my 75 years but Angelina changed my mind with one song! I now spend hours everyday watching and listening to her.I can't explain it,and have given up trying! I enjoyed your reaction.
  • @McDevittMike
Just for your information, Angelina's producers have said that she is one of only three artists they've worked with who seldom require more than one vocal take - the others being Beyoncé and Sam Smith. 😎

I am 70 y old and have never heard a singer like her in my whole life. She is on another level. Her voice touches my heart and cleanses my soul. ❤

Appreciate your reaction and analysis. I am not a vocal coach but do know that she started at an early age...way earlier than this, studying all the Jazz greats from many decades ago thanks to her Grandma exposing her to all that great music....Jazz. Most children singers, as far as I know or heard, do not start singing Jazz as a starting point as a singer. Not sure if Jazz is one of your fields of vocal coaching and such but this child is quite adept and phenomenally still one of the best now days at singing Jazz, as it is the "root" of her singing talent. I am quite sure you know that Jazz incorporates a lot of different phrasing, back phrasing, enunciation of words and vowel manipulation as well as many nuances and techniques, all of which she is well aware of in her musicality. She is perfectly capable of clear and concise enunciation and phrasing when the song calls for it, which she has dozens and dozens of songs doing precisely that. She chooses when and where to do that depending on her interruption of the music or song. Been listening to her for over 7 years now and every song she has performed. Just my opinion and Thank you for your reaction. 🥰🥰 17 year old currently.

All of Angelina's vocal evolution is available to follow on YouTube. Over 200 videos brilliantly show how she has worked on certain aspects of her voice and her technique. The thing you didn't get into is the emotional impact she has had on her fans, who really do love her to an astonishing degree. I am one of those and I've been following her since the beginning. I've been trying to understand it for almost 10 years. 😎
  • Thank you for your interesting analysis and the best wishes for her. She's a great family around her, who supports her and also give her the shield 🛡️ against bad influence. Btw she wrote a song about this, called shield at the age of twelve 🎉
  • Im a 60 yr old Man, Angelina has the Best Voice ive heard in my lifetime, I've been Listening to her for over 3 yrs and haven't missed a day, her Tone, pitch, and vocal techniques combined with the Emotion she conveys with every song is Unequaled

I can appreciate your reluctance to react to young singers. Many have coached voices and may do well for a few years but very few last for very long (many different reasons). There is no question that it’s a tough industry. Angelina’s mother, shortly after Angelina won NGT stated that she wanted Angelina to have as normal a childhood as possible. She also said that she had to help Angelina learn to find a balance with her singing and the rest of her life, Angelina, can’t help that as, she has stated, singing is like breathing for her. Her, family are very supportive and protective of her. They are there to support her passion. It’s not about money. Her mom said that at any time if Angelina did not wish to do this anymore, we would Berber hear from them again. When Angelina won NGT (approximately $50,000 USD) her family supported her wish to donate the winnings to charity for children. Angelina, was only 6 when she befriended a young girl (about her own age) in the Middle East that was weighing people to earn money to support her younger siblings, their parents had died. The girl had no shoes and it was very cold. Angelina gave the girl, the shoes she was wearing (her favorite sea green ankle boots). She, decided at that time she always perform barefoot as long as there were children in need , in the world. She has been performing for 10 years and has always kept that promise. You can see her performing barefoot outdoors in the frigid Norwegian winters. She journals of her daily life and she recorded the experience with that young girl that day. When she was nine she wrote a book, Between Two Hearts, about the experience, becoming the youngest published author in Norway. During a tv interview she read an excerpt form that journal. It brought tears to my eyes. The book is a very touching read. As you may know, Angelina is self taught and she has done her own arrangements, from the beginning. Her original songs are her ideas, but she understands the value of working with others to fine tune them. So yes she has co writes for most of them. Although her foundation was formed out of her love for jazz, she sings many different styles. Her vocal range is very impressive.I do hope you will consider exploring her world of musical further and listen to some of her non jazz songs also.

I just listened to you for the first time and I am impressed by your analysis of Angelina's journey. I am a big fan of hers and have been following many reactions to her music. It took me a while to get through this because I kept getting interrupted. I noticed that I was the 364th person to give it a thumbs up, but only the 5th person to leave a comment. I believe this is because most of Angelina's fans are loyal to a fault and don't like any critisizem of her at all. I don't find your comments that offensive, but an honest analysis of what you are hearing. I will give you a little of my thoughts about Angelina's young performances. I believe, like some people have photographic memory, that Angelina has almost audiographic memory. I mean she here's the song playing in her mind and sings along with what she hears including staying on pitch. Part of the reason you have trouble understanding the lyrics in Gloomy Sunday is because Angelina is singing what she heard when she listened to song. In other words when a child hears a word they don't know or understand they will sometimes interpretate it to a word they do know. If you listen to Billie Holiday's recording of the song and then listen to Angelina, you will find some of the words are changed and not necessarily on purpose. Angelina's family have been very protective of her and have tried to allow her to be a child as much as possible while still supporting her dream of becoming a great singer and musician. I don't know if you have this information about her or not, but I'm going to include a bio of her that Andy Schnell put together. Born Angelina Jordan Astar on January 10, 2006 in Oslo, Norway to her Norwegian mother, Sara Astar and her Swedish father, Gerry Christian Slattman. Angelina started singing around 18 months of age, after listening to Whitney Houston on YouTube. She quickly became obsessed with listening to music videos and her maternal grandmother, Mery Zamani got Angelina interested in classic jazz. Mery Zamani is Iranian and was a prodigy as an artist and poet while growing up in Iran. Angelina attended the Oslo Waldorf School and participated in the Oslo School of Music and Performing Arts after-school program, where starting around age 4, she had training in music but no vocal training. Her teachers were smart enough to not attempt to change what she was doing vocally. More recently she along with her grandmother have designed and made the clothing she wears on stage. Why Angelina always performs barefoot At age 6, while traveling in the Middle East with her mother and grandmother, Angelina noticed a girl around her age standing on the side of the road, asking people to step on her bathroom scale to be weighed in hopes of getting some money. Angelina took off her shoes so as to not get the scale dirty and stepped on the scale many times to make the girl feel better. Angelina befriends the girl who was not wearing shoes and has scars on her feet, and learns she is an orphan. The orphan girl tells Angelina how beautiful she thinks her shoes are. Angelina says her shoes don’t fit her well and she wants to give her shoes to the orphan girl who thanks Angelina for giving her the shoes. Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, “I want to become a doctor, but that will never happen since I have no parents and I have siblings so I have to do whatever is necessary for us to survive.” Angelina told the girl to never give up on her dreams. The poor girl asked Angelina what she wanted to be when she grew up and Angelina replied that she wanted to sing for the whole world. The poor girl said she would pray every day so Angelina’s dream would come true. Angelina still says she thinks of that homeless girl every day and has always performed barefoot to remind her of all the children who are less fortunate. At age 9, she became the youngest published author in Norway’s history by writing a book about this encounter in the Middle East. PLEASE PURCHASE Angelina’s book from her merchandise store on her official website, angelinajordanofficial Angelina, at age 6 and 7, did record a few songs in a recording studio at her school, most notably “I Who Have Nothing”, a truly remarkable performance for a 7 year old. At age 7, Angelina’s audition on Norway’s Got Talent, was a cover of Billie Holiday’s “Gloomy Sunday”, a song which was banned by a number of European countries during World War II because authorities worried the song would increase the suicide rate. Truly bizarre that this is the song to launch the career of a child musical prodigy. One of the judges on NGT cried. Musicians working with Angelina would call her the boss since she knew exactly how she wanted to sing the song and would confidently instruct the musicians. While one could say Angelina was mimicking other artists, there is no doubt she had her own style and created her own arrangements, even at this early age. Angelina had turned 8 years old for her next performance on NGT, covering Billie Holiday’s “I’m a Fool to Want You” singing acapella which was required by NGT unless the singer also played an instrument while singing. This was the Judge’s cut round of the competition to trim the number of vocalists who passed their audition, and was not performed in front of an audience. In the Semi Final round of NGT, Angelina sang “Bang Bang” which was written by Sonny Bono and was first performed by his wife Cher but is best known sung by Nancy Sinatra. The improvement in each performance is incredible even though there were only a couple months between them. In the Finals, Angelina did a cover of George Gershwin’s, “Summertime” and won the contest, capturing 46% of the votes from the ten finalists. When asked what she would like to do with the prize money she won (500,000 kroner or about $80,000), Angelina replied, “I want to give it to the poor children”. The vast majority of the prize money was donated to charity benefitting poor children. Record company executives flew their private jets to Norway to attempt to sign 8 year old Angelina but all were thankfully rebuked. Disney also made an offer but not accepted. In December 2014, Angelina realized a life-long desire to sing at the Save the Children's Peace Prize Celebration which is part of the Noble Peace Prize celebration. Angelina’s family took her to United States, Brazil, Germany, France, United Kingdom, Russia, South Korea, Singapore and Mexico among other corners of Earth, to perform for heads of state and to help raise money for charity. All before Angelina turned 14. At age 11, Angelina recorded her “It’s Magic” album which has, at times, been in the top 10 best selling jazz albums. The album can be purchased on iTunes or Amazon. On June 27, 2018, at age 12, Jordan performed “Fly Me to the Moon” for Quincy Jones in The O2 Arena in London. She has said that was the high point of her young career which was already in it’s 6th year. During 2018, Angelina lost her paternal grandfather, her friend Avicii and one of her idols, Aretha Franklin. She did a moving tribute for each. In 2019, Angelina accepted an invitation to compete in the 2nd season of America’s Got Talent (AGT), The Champions. She had, since age 3, wanted to perform for Simon Cowell and she earned his praise with her genius arrangement of “Bohemian Rhapsody”. The surviving members of Queen loved it so much they put a link to it on their Twitter and allowed Angelina to copyright her version. Angelina’s family refused to sign any agreement with AGT which would give Simon any control over her career. Angelina, before age 14, had covered more than 130 songs from 80 different artists, spanning at least 8 genres, all of which are available on YouTube. Angelina has always made changes to each song she covers and often her version is preferred over the original. On YouTube, search on The Complete Works of Angelina Jordan as Rusty Shackleford has put all songs in one file and has a complete playlist in the description of that video. The pandemic hit shortly after her performances on AGT and likely caused a change of plans by her family, most notably her Uncle Michael who is her manager. Her family agreed to a contract with Republic Records in August 2020. Republic Records declared Angelina Jordan their highest priority new artist. Reportedly her family requested Republic to allow her as normal a childhood as possible and therefore have yet to fully promote her. During the pandemic, Angelina was often seen buying meals for the homeless on the streets of Los Angeles. In November 2020, Angelina released “Million Miles” which she wrote after the passing of her beloved maternal grandfather. She dedicated the song to anyone who has ever lost a loved one. Angelina had previously released, 3 other original songs: “What is Life”, “Oslo” and “Shield” In April 2021, her original “7th Heaven” was released. A jazzy, danceable, inspiring song. Angelina had concerts in Norway in July 2022. In December 2022, Angelina performed at the Asian American Awards in Los Angeles. On 2/27/23, Angelina performed at the FIFA Awards ceremony in Paris, France, with a viewing audience in the millions. Personally, Angelina is a great human being and her music came into my life when I needed it most. Her music has improved the quality of my life more than I can express. I now introduce her to as many people as I can, with the hope her music will do the same for others. We know once her family believes the time is right and allows Republic Records to fully promote her, she will become the superstar she has always dreamt and believed she would be. I encourage others to use this biography to help educate others about the love, empathy, magic and beauty that is Angelina Jordan Astar and her unique music.

It's good to you could speak two completely different languages perfectly at 7!
  • Actually Queen themselves shared this performance on their socials, saying Wow, what a rendition ❤️ Thats a huuuge compliment 👍
  • @keithserafy
This is the 1st track on her recently released EP called "Old Enough," with 6 original co-written songs. The 2nd track, Now I'm the Fool has a music video, but the last 4 tracks are audio only. Each song is a different mix of music genre & each is amazing, Imo. She calls her style of music Jazzy Pop, but I would add Retro Jazzy Pop. A few days ago she released a new original single called Our Time, a very up-beat dance song that is being used for a national commercial ad for SoFi Financial, an on-line bank. They also have SoFi Stadium (70K seating) near LA where pro football & other big events occur & where the commercial & song will be played. She has also promised us a full LP Album of original songs by the end of this year. Her parents have been holding her back for over 10 years now, but she just graduated HS & turns 18 on Jan 10th, so she is ready to go full-time & be promoted by Republic Records. She's going to be BIG!!!
  • @peterstadelmeier
Hi, she is 17 years old at the last song here and in 2 months she will be 18, the whole EP is such a masterpiece, everything is original and so well written by her, I can only say she is outstanding and by far the best singer in this one Decade or century and Diamond is an even bigger surprise I have never experienced in my entire life that an EP only contains number 1 songs, each of the 6 songs is a hit and grammy worthy I hope that Republic Records finally starts the promo engine and you Played on the radio and TV, only YouTube is not enough. The crazy thing is that she said that the EP with 6 songs is a small selection of over 100 songs that she has already written, which gives hope for the future that we will be surprised with even more beautiful songs
  • @nancywilson9380
If you feel Angelina wasn't always clearly enunciating at 7 yrs old, please take into account that English wasn't her first language. I believe English was her third language behind Norwegian and Iranian (from her grandmother) Most importantly, she always had a clear understanding of the meaning of the lyrics that she expresses admirably even though her pronunciation may sometimes be in error
  • @clones365
Angelina..."I thought "Old Enough'' basically stands for who I am and my whole journey of experiencing so much. And all the songs that I've written for my EP is all from my journal. So, yes, I've been so lucky to be able to put that into music and share the love with you guys and basically story tell the whole journey to you, all my beautiful Angels, my fans. [reads online comment:] "That journal is priceless." Aww! You know, I have this whole bookshelf in my room and it's filled with a bunch of stuff that I write every single day. When I'm in the studio, I vibe, I jam to the piano. It just comes out, you know. That's where the magic happens!".
  • FYI, I think it's an important distinction that the AGT appearance was in the "CHAMPIONS EDITION", the best of the best from all over the world. And she won the golden buzzer, and instantly received the rights to her version of the song from Queen. So yeah didn't win, but did win.
  • @hu._-
Very thoughtful and respectful commentary, thank you for that. Having listened to most all of her repertoire, I have come to some different conclusions. The pronunciation in Gloomy Sunday, IMO, reflects the heavy accent of Billie Holiday more than anything else. Certainly, other factors may be at play such as missing her front teeth, singing in a foreign language, stylistic choice, etc., etc. I do think you would be better able to assess this point by listening to any of her other 3 NGT performances where you will find exquisite pronunciation. You will also find further evidence that the breathiness and vowel distortion along with dropping final consonants are used as tools to achieve the effect she desires, all under precise control. I would very much like to hear your thoughts on those other performances. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts on this young jazz queen.
  • Fascinating analysis of Angelina's voice and its development! You'll be glad to know she has a very protective team, both her family (her uncle is her manager), and her team at Republic Records. She's received special care and support at Republic, which has meant keeping her a bit under the radar until she's older. But she's done a few concerts, both locally and internationally, so she gets to keep doing live performances, which she loves, without being pushed into the pressure of a big tour. Wait until 2024, and then probably they'll give her recordings more of a push.
  • @kiwi57ie
She always performs without shoes, as she met a child in the Middle East, when she was six, that didn’t have shoes. AJ vowed never to perform with shoes, till all the children have shoes. She has always had full control of the musicians etc. she didn’t win agt because she wouldn’t hand over the creative permission for her work. She donates a large portion of her money, and is very philanthropic. The woman in the 3rd video is her grandmother mery zamani, who is an artist, and has helped Angelina with the video aspects of Angelina’s work.
