NOTE: Sometimes I accidentally used the word “license” when I meant “rights” or “royalty rights” but you get the gist! Lemme know if you want me to explain any other crazy stories (fun ones, not controversies or dramas)
  • Andre explaining Pac Man lore and copyright drama with old black sitcom clips is what I watch this channel for.
  • Idk what’s weirder:the fact that Namco doesn’t own Mrs PAC-Man or that Sega doesn’t own a few tracks from Sonic 3.
  • @ThePkmnYPerson
Namco: We won't use Ms. Pac-Man anymore because we don't wanna have to pay royalty fees to AtGames. Nintendo: We don't acknowledge Donkey Kong Jr. anymore just because.

It's so odd to me that Professor Pac is the only one who made it out of this unscathed. 🤣 Amazing video, Andre!
  • It’s really confuses me how another company can even have the rights to anything with the the term “Pac-man” despite not even owning the Pac-Man IP. How is that even legal for another company to even still use the “Pac-Man” name?
  • @RisingJay
This is crazier than the Spider-Man drama from 2019 😂 At some point I guess they'll have to hash it out, but it does seem strange (to me) Namco wouldn't just buy her rights flat out way back when...
  • @Vikumax
Personally I feel it would have been way better name if they had called her "Pac-Ma'am"

Andre referencing "A Different World" is one of many reasons I love this channel. 😀

I always knew AtGames was a villain all along - ever since a well-intentioned friend bought me their Sega Genesis flashback console! I have NEVER seen Genesis games run so poorly in my life - glad Sega made their own Genesis Mini to right that terrible affront to gamers everywhere. The Ms Pacman situation is equally unforgivable. Eff you, AtGames!

When you think about it, Ms. Pac-Man the arcade game is one of the first, and still one of the most famous, examples of a video game being modded.
  • @Obi-Wan_Kenobi
I really do think the Ms Pacman was the first playable female video game character. She's part of gaming history and not including her in modern titles is nothing short of disrespectful even though I know their hands are legally tied.

It's sad that some low-rate, bargin bin plug n play game manufacturer has royalty rights to one of the best arcade game of all time, forcing Bandai-Namco to pay them.
  • Ahhh yeah copywrite, licensing and names is hard to sort out. Makes me wonder how the heck Sakurai was able to make Smash Ultimate happen. His legal team must be Phoenix Wright level.
  • @instantfunness
I was surprised when not one, but TWO Smash Bros. games did not have Ms. Pac-Man as an echo fighter/alternate costume. Then I heard about this not that long ago and it finally all made sense. Thanks for bringing peoples attention to this. Maybe the public can sway the tide of this legal snafu with there wallets.
  • When I was about 5 (80s) the local sandwich shop had Ms Pac Man and it was my first exposure to video games. Had a crush too. It was the legs, the original art gave her curvy lady legs. I felt the same way about a Tina Turner poster. I knew what I was about.

Andre explaining video game law. This could've been a crossover with Legal Eagle.
  • @starsINSPACE
There's also Pac-Marie who I only know about from Jonii's Disappearance of Mz Pacman video.
