Interesting bit of trivia: actor Eric Braeden, who played John Jacob Astor in 1997's "Titanic" is a survivor of this sinking.

A Forgotten Disaster.. the people on her just wanted to escape the war but they were soon taken away from life..

The Wilhelm Gustloff was initially spotted as the captain refused to sail with no lights on! He was a real smart-ass cookie! So the ships navigation lights were turned on and some other lights on the upper decks too...these lights were spotted by Marchenko of S-13 several miles away....so he focused his sub on the ship and the rest is tragic history!

A beautiful and fitting tribute, to those who, died. May you all RIP
  • She was under order to have no lights on, but because of a approaching fleet of German mine sweepers the captain feared a collision and ordered her running lights on. The lighting of her navigation lights was a beacon in the dark for the subs. The wilhelm is a unfortunate loss of war.

The Wilhelm Gustloff gave priority to the evacuation of wounded soldiers and U-boat personnel. It was also armed with anti-arcraft guns. These factors made it an auxiliary warship and a legitimate target for Russian submarines. The civilians wanted to flee from the advancing Russian army and knew the risk they were taking by sailing in a war zone. Had this been an Allied submarine commander, he would also have sunk this ship. Civilian deaths would have been 'unfortunate' just as the 500,000 German civilians killed in Allied bombimg raids; or the 200,000 Japanese killed by the two atomic bombs; or the 2,000,000 Vietnamese killed as a result of American action in Viet Nam. War is not meant to be fair!

I believe that in a case of War. Passenger ships carrying Passengers even if it has Ammunitions aboard should be off limits and no matter what flag it is flying only if it fires or uses deadly force. like with humans. Deadly force = deadly force back is justified Like if you agree.

I remember watching these when I was a little one.

Nice video as always, what soundtracks did you use?
  • @SillyLooBird
Just read Salt to the Sea. It’s a shame this ship isn’t more well known.
  • @brody210
This was the deadliest sinking of all time with 9,000 dead
