This play is NOT the Phil Jackson Lakers Triangle offense. This play demonstrates how to effectively counter a 3-2 or 1-2-2 zone defense and an extended zone defense with a high trap. If you're a beginning coach or player and your team doesn't know how to run an offense to counter a 1-2-2 or 3-2 zone, this video is for you.

Coaches should and do change their defensive strategies to counter your offensive firepower during a game. Many times, an opposing coach will change their defensive strategy to employ a 3-2 or 1-2-2 zone defense. This defensive strategy provides solid perimeter coverage and can effectively shut down your perimeter players outside shots.

Learn and keep this offensive strategy in your arsenal so you can force your opponent to change up their defensive tactics!

This offense against a 3-2 or 1-2-2 zone is great for teaching youth, club teams, junior high, high school, and recreational teams.

If you have recorded video of your team executing this play or any of the plays you've learned from my channel and would like for me to do a YouTube video review of your team executing the play, please email me at

anyone else's coach made them watch this?

We used this as our default offense vs 1-2-2 and man defense at a tournament last week. Teams quickly figured out what we were trying to do when our best shooter knocked down a couple 3's but that opened up opportunities inside and for the weak side guard. The kids also really enjoyed running this offense. Thanks for the idea!

Coach, I like this because it is easy to teach, offers some really good corner shooting opportunities - because of the low post screen, and also the dump down pass to the low post on the guard to guard pass. The only thing I would explain differently are the slides on the 3-2 zone. We teach the point of the 3-2 to cover the high post, the wing pressure the ball, and the back man on the side of the ball to either 3/4 the low post man (low side) and/or play half way between the low post and the corner so that he can cover either the post or the corner without over committing to one or the other. Then as the ball is passed to the corner, the top man, who has covered the high post, to slide low. The wing plays half way between the corner and the wing man. The off-side low man plays behind the low post, and the off-wing has rebound responsibility on the help side. So what we basically do is have each of our 5 defenders cover a man-and-a-half. It works well.

@CoachRuss - great video! Question: can the opposite guard up top cut back door once the ball is passed to the high post? I assume the wing guarding that player may turn their head to help defend the 2 on 1 situation inside, leaving that opposite guard open to slide down for a jumper or all the way for a back door layup. Thanks!

Excellent presentation, clear. well done. Also discusses what 3-2 zone may do, right and wrong.

I like this. Will probably run it with the Girard cutting thru to the opposite corner and the original corner filling up

Hi coach! Do the two guards up top do anything besides pass ?
  • @enan0sh

I use Keynote, it's the MAC version of MS PowerPoint. For the audio layer I use Garage Band and then I past the audio into each slide.
  • Great video coach, I'm from Mexico, and the teams play zone in the defense. I'm a player in the college, and this is really awesome to use in the games
  • This simple mathematics....but I love it..and this is a great video.  :D
