I don't think he was reacting to Steve's strength, which is not really that great, but rather Steve's spirit. Presumably, with the Soul Stone he could see the "I could do this all day" spirit of Captain America and marveled at his resolve.

i think that thanos had visions of tony stark defeating him just like stark had visions of thanos destroying everything as he said you are not the only one cursed with knowledge.In this thanos is referring to himself as only tony and stark had visions of each other. Strange came to now that stark is the only one who can kill thanos and therefore he sacrificed the time stone for tony's life. the movie started with stark talking about feeling that his visions become true and then he said in the sanctum that he had visions of thanos for years. i think this is the most accurate theory as it solves many mysteries.

Nobody said this yet Howard Stark had the space stone after he found it in the ocean. Howard Stark had to experiment with it so who is to say Howard Stark and Thanos didnt communicate!! Just a theory. The Russo brothers said avengers 4 will close winter soldier n civil war both of those movies. I think we are gonna find out Thanos is linked to all the heroes in way that's gonna shock us all

I think Thanos knows him because of Jarvis being connected to vision and the soul gem/stone.

I disagree with Thanos knowing him simply by his previous exploits. It goes a lot deeper than that. The MCU isn't that shallow and has better writing than that. Judging from the large numbers of theories I've seen, a lot of fans aren't understanding what they're shown or what's said. Hulk was hiding cuz he was afraid of Thanos? No, he and Banner are having an internal conflict as spelled out clearly during Ragnarok. Strange got beat and took it like a punk? No, he looked at over 14 million possible futures and saw the one and only way they can win, as he clearly states in Infinity War. How incredibly anticlimactic would that be? "My minions told me your name." End of story. Nothing more there. Big dramatic moment in Infinity War, completely invalidated and pointless.

Let's not forget that Loki knew exactly who Captain America was, when he first encounters him in A1. It's clear that Thanos doesn't just invade planets, without knowing the strengths and weaknesses. If I'm not mistaken, in the comics, Corvus Clave is Thanos's military strategists. Perhaps he gave Loki an intelligence report on all the "special beings" on Earth. Such as Cap, Tony, Hulk, SHIELD and others. Thanos decided to personally collect the stones not just because of the failures of Loki and Ronin. But because the time was right, with Odin and the Ancient One dead. Asgard destroyed and Xandar probably still recovering from it's military being obliterated in GOTG. SHIELD is not as strong as it was, after the events of TWS. Then we have the Avengers divided after CW. Thanos knows all about these individuals and groups that could be a threat to him. But it does seem that he has a special connection to Tony. I'm sure he knows of Howard as well, since Howard recovered the SS. Hopefully we will see Tony use his BARF tech to communicate with Howard and we get more info on Thanos. Assuming Howard knows of him.
