Okay, I've got it figured out. All 8D songs are not alike. The ones that are not done well just sound like the music is going back and forth from left to right, pretty much the same effect you would get by moving the individual volume off and on for each side. Then there are the ones that have been done well, like this one. The music doesn't just go from side to side, it revolves around you, moving at some point just out of your reach. It goes behind you and then in front of you, sometimes even moving further away from you and then closer again. If you are listening to one of the many 8D songs out there and you feel like the music is coming from an outside speaker and not your headphones, you're listening to 8D done right!

Reminds me of observing the mainstage at a psy festival from further away on a hill and just listening to the music that gets carried away by the wind and spreads above the whole area... great!
