My grandad lived on little Diomede as an elementary school teacher with my grandmother. He lived there during the cold war era so he had a lot of great stories. He said that he could see soviet spies looking at him if he used binoculars from across the ice, and that the natives sometime traveled across the ice and talked to the Russians, and they would sometime bring messages to each other. There was also once a polar bear that lived underneath the elementary school that needed to be driven out.

“But this is A M E R I C A so we don’t walk” I was dying along with all of those other jokes
  • Ok guys sorry for the confusion with the metric conversions. To clear things up, 4,000,000 centimeters is about 40,000,000 millimeters. I hope that helps!

I wish I lived in little Diomede so that I could ask the people on big Diomede what did I have for breakfast next day.

Doctor: You have 21 hours to live. Me (Moving to big diamede) : HOW BOUT NOW PUNK
  • @brycemo
the funniest part is that metric is so easy to convert that i instantly could tell 4,000,000cm = 40km
  • 0:22 he thought he pranked us with the 4 million centimeters but luckily the metric system is easily converted so i knew in an instant that it was 40 km

I need to get me a pen pal in Little Diomede.

  • @alexanderlee38
"for non americans thats 4 million centimeters" I laughed harder than I should have at this!
  • @MonstraG55
The funniest thing that 4,000,000 cm to km is easy enough to convert so I didn't need to pause the video. It may be the best commentary on ease of metric system. lel

Fun thing to think about - back when the Bering Strait formed a land bridge, these two islands would've been the highest mountains that humans saw as they migrated across to the Americas.
