Every version is perfect for its purpose. Jodi's intimate and vulnerable, Sierra's theatrical and showy, while Halle's is a mix between those two. I'd say Halle merges the best of both worlds. Each lady did a wonderful job. 🙏🏻

I don't think the original is definitely weak, it's more sad. Someone who has been told her whole life how to be and not to explore outside of her own bubble. She is quietly hoping instead of loudly declaring

Note: In the original, Howard Ashman was telling Jodi to talk more and sing less Broadway. This is a quiet monologue that happens to have notes alone inside a dark cave. So that is why Jodi is quieter in the original compared to the rest. Even when Jodi herself sings it live, it sounds different (ignoring that her voice changed since recording it).

With halle's ariel sounds frustrated and devastated, jodi's Ariel sounds more in wonder, curious, and innocent. It's so interesting how you can tell the same overall story with such different emotions.

I think that everyone who has sung this song did a great job in their own way.
  • @joshualeger4959
Jodi Benson learned her phrasing, dynamics, etc. from Howard Ashman HIMSELF. He specifically told her, “no Ethel Merman!” He wanted it to be more intimate and not overly “performed.”

I love Jodi’s tone & acting choices the most but Halle and Sierra are more impressive vocally
  • @kempiro
Halle's climactic modulated "above" has this Pavarotti grab-me-by-the-tear-ducts brilliance for me.

I love the 2023 version the most. It sounds so good
  • @Vixiebabe
Halle's version is the only one that made me cry
  • @FrostySalt
Jodi's voice will always be my fav. Love Halle's. Both are incredible. Would love them to do a duet. Jodi's sounds grounded like Ariel is having a deep conversation with the audience. Halle's sounds expressive with Ariel finally getting out how she feels. Both are fantastic and you feel for Ariel in both.
  • I just love the 2023 version more. Is much more powerful and gives me chills everytime

The original doesn't sound weak. It is as it was written for that animated film. It still is perfect for what that was. A live action film as well as a Broadway show are 2 completely different mediums. That said, I still love Jodi's but Halle's is my favorite. They are 2 different approaches and I love them both. Not everything needs to be over the top.

I think I liked Halle's version of the last big note the most. Compared to the broadway version it felt more fitting for the vocal part to ascend with the instrumental as well. Kinda gives the feeling of Ariel actually swimming towards the surface but falling just short of her dream.
  • @tylerj7298
Howard Ashman (the lyricist) told Jodi to do the song small as the character is just talking to herself. He wanted it acted more over power.
  • @WuffKawaii
Jodi and Halle are very good in their own version for what they are to the portrayal. They feel geniune to their version of Ariel
  • Halle has no equal! Her voice gives me tickles in my brain. It’s like a cerebral cuddle. Sierra is also very good.

Never had a Disney song hit me emotionally like Halle did when I saw the movie, literally had some tears fall just such and angelic sound
  • @jordanhilliard5896
Halles virgin makes you feel every note every emotion that’s the song is is actually truly about which makes you feel the movie so much more
