    "Oh, it's just clothes/hair" my old white peers would probably be dismissive and say something like that. Not at all... not at all. Especially considering clothes/hair sometimes is the only means of self expression or social signalling for those without a voice. The "subordination/obedience" factor starts very young alongside the sexualization. I sympathize only because i grew up female in a conservative family, though bc of my privilege i never experienced the full weight of such damaging double standards, what i saw was ultimately distaste for what they feel are "nonwhite" traits ... its so obvious and unfair. I can see why a black Mom would be conflicted then when it comes time to pick out clothing or whether to participate in swimming, it is just an unrealistic amount of pressure. Great summary.
