Published 2023-08-20
The FULL RESTORATION of a Beautiful Writing Bureau/Secretary Desk.

This Bureau/Desk has been in my customers family for a very long time and is very special to her. Although on first glance this looks in good condition it did have issues and needed a lot more work than you'd think.

Hi Dave. Cocktail cabinet has gone down a treat and so have its many contents haha. I had about 20 different large bottles of different concoctions. It's down to 2 now thanks to friends. It's the nicest piece of furniture I've ever ever owned and I will be purchasing from you again in the future 100%. Have a lovely Sunday evening.

Hello sweet Daisy... are you having Dad & Bella as special guests on your Youtube channel? lol You did a lovely job of refreshing this antique secretary from top to bottom, highlighting the exceptionally nice woodgrain pattern in the veneer... well done David! 👍

Beautiful desk. After having many dog friends in my life I learned to never begrudge them all the attention they deserve. Great video.😊
  • That piece is a real treasure. I appreciate so much the care you put into restoring it.

Hey David! The remains of the finish and what it looked like when it was removed suggest that it is colorless nitro lacquer (nitrocellulose lacquer). It was invented around 1920 and quickly became popular because it looked like shellac but was much easier to use. That also correlates well with the time the furniture is from, I think around 1930/40. This varnish tends to go blind when it is old enough, and you can often only guess at the grain of the wood. It is often not easy to remove, especially when several layers have been sprayed on top of each other. Its advantage is that it protects the wood relatively well (as you can see from the ink stains). Good job, fun to watch. Thanks for that!

Waggling /wag-el-ing/ verb, to pry something loose as your dog plays with cork happily. Yes. I believe that is the technical term for 10:15 LOL Love your videos so much. 😊
