Over the course of the 80s, British electronic music legends Depeche Mode led the forefront of the synthpop and industrial pop music scenes, catapulting the alternative sounds of these worlds into mainstream attention. At the decade’s end (and seemingly at the top of their potential) the band returned to the studio to record their seventh studio album Violator. This landmark album includes several iconic singles including “Personal Jesus” and “Enjoy the Silence”. With “Enjoy the Silence” Depeche Mode took a serene ballad of satisfaction, and wrapped it in disco dance-ability….kicking off the nineties with a new wave of poignant, self-reflective songwriting which embraced the infectious sounds of pop.

“Enjoy the Silence” was released on February 5, 1990, as the album’s second single. The album itself followed on March 19. The song was an international hit, reaching the top ten throughout Europe and the US. It took the number one spot on the US Alternative Airplay, and the number two spot on the dance charts, it also held the number one singles spot in Denmark, Poland and Spain. Violator hit number two on the UK albums chart.

“Enjoy the Silence” won the Best British Single award in 1991, and the song can be credited as one of the defining tracks of Depeche Mode’s career – one that brought the band’s groundbreaking electronic, industrial, and synth-pop sounds into truly mainstream attention. Depeche Mode’s music dominated the end of the 20th century and their legacy has earned them entrance into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where they were inducted in 2020.

Warren's face when he plays the isolated tracks. Pure love of Music!!!
  • I am 25 years old and 7 years ago I first heard Enjoy The Silence on the radio, I became obsessed with its sounds, then I looked it up and met Depeche Mode, and they became my favorite band and Enjoy The Silence my favorite song. Depeche Mode is a band that has no comparison, they make music, they make magic.
  • @JensLarsen
Alan Wilder often seems so underrated for how he created amazing soundscapes and arrangements for Depeche Mode. Great video! :)

“Violator” was their best album and one of the best albums of all time. IMHO “Violator” landed like an alien in the spring of 1990 given that since 1988, most popular music in North America was firmly in the grips of hair metal. I was graduating that summer but nixed going to my high school prom since it was the same night that Depeche Mode were playing Montreal that night for a sold-out—in-15-minutes show at the Montreal Forum. My high school was like a really bad John Hughes film and I would rather celebrate my favourite band of all time with 5th row seats that I had slept out for for 2 nights instead of spending all this money looking my best on a bunch of people I couldn’t stand being around. It paid off. After the concert, we went to the hotel where they were staying and I ended up meeting Martin and Fletch, took pictures and I ended up chatting with Martin for about 10 minutes. He told us which industrial goth club they were going to and invited us along. We met them at the club and I actually danced with Fletch and Alan. Come Monday morning and I find out that prom was a bust, everyone hated it. When people asked me what I did, I told them and eventually showed them the pictures. NOT going to prom was the best decision of my life.
  • 10:20 Hearing Dave Gahan's vocals isolated make them even more incredible. Seriously amazing!!
  • I was 14 when this song came out. The metal heads loved it, the prog guys loved it, the girls loved it. I do not understand to this day how it did not spend months at #1. There was not anyone that didn’t have this CD or Tape in their car on repeat.

Depeche Mode is the band that stays with you even if you change your personal taste in music.

One thing that rarely gets mentioned is the sheer harmonic genius of Gore's writing - just the first two chords of this song's verse: Cminor to Eb minor - are incredibly bold and unusual, yet he resolves it effortlessly. Also the last two chords of the chorus, Cminor to B major, create such an arresting denouement (Radiohead stole that move a few times). This is another factor missing from the over-corrected, conservative electronic pop of the moment - harmonic intrigue. Everything is the same old I V vi IV or a slight shuffling of the same. Great series, Warren!

I’m not quite sure of the year, either 1989 or 90 but my band was playing at a club DM came to after their concert. It took me a minute to recognize them but after our set, they came up and introduced themselves and kept saying how much they liked my band. They invited us to their table to have a drink. They were cool AF, super nice and after several drinks with them, we went to karaoke. Fun night
  • @Vivacior
I literally sang this song...many times.... to my infant daughter back in 2001...in the middle of the night (anyone who's had a kid can relate... getting woken several times in the dark to feed/soothe...tiresome, but you'll never forget a precious tiny gem in your arms) Fast forward.... She's now about to hit 21 and in college... Doing great. This song bonds us. It's forever in our đź’“s... Cheers! JerBear Charlotte USA
  • @MrAdammassacre
i remember when Enjoy the silence came out it was MASSIVE!! nothing sounded like it still such a huge track.
  • Depeche Mode is one of those bands (like many) that I either hated, did not care for, or couldn't appreciate while in high school in the late 1980s. That would change in 1990-91 as I wholeheartedly embraced 80s alternative music - the whole lot. Thirty-plus years later, Violator is still one of my favourite albums.
  • @bolttracks
If you want a crash course in larger-than-life melody writing, Depeche Mode knows no equal. From the riffs to their choruses, straight genius.
  • @BillGraper
"Enjoy The Silence" is my favorite Depeche Mode song! How could such an amazing song peak at #8 in the USA? It should've spent at least 4 weeks at #1.
  • I worked at mute 88 to 90 and remember they were in the mute studio at 429 harrow road around this time so sure they did work there on violator as well as flood was always there along with the other members, great times to be at mute records happy days!
  • @kevinrose4281
That whole album is programmed to perfection. Alan and Flood at their best.
  • @edalder2000
"Depeche Mode 101" is one of the all time great concert films. One of my favorite bands is New Order. So Depeche Mode were up my alley. they had pop sensibilities and gave it a dark twist. The ability to pump drama up to immense levels and have that mean something. No camp at all. Depeche Mode is a band that can be presented and shown as a band that has electronic fronts with the ability to create emotional music that resonated. Martin Gore is an amazing songwriter and Dave Gahan is a one of a kind front man.
  • @leefchapman
This song seems to only be getting more and more popular as the years go on. It's THAT iconic. Great video, Warren as always!
  • @EYErobot
Violator is one of the finest produced albums ever. Alan and Flood did a lot of work fine tuning the sounds and it shows. This is an record that will stand the test of time. Thanks Warren, I have the same passion for Depeche Mode and this is a truly special album, a desert island album. Cheers!
