(backstory continuation)
He pushed rather hard on it by accident (he knew it was there and always tried to be careful to avoid pushing on it, in case it broke), and then there was a sudden popping noise. Cyrus was worried that he had broken the lantern! He examined the base but to his surprise, a metal plate had come of the base, revealing... a compass! He held the lantern upside-down (which thankfully wasn't damaged) to get a good look at it. After some more studying he realized that this was either a very broken compass, or it was pointing somewhere other than north! Now Cyrus had a new mission, to find out what his father's lantern has been hiding all these years. He would do this all of course, once he finished his book on knot tying.
