Hi there! This is the camper sign up project for the upcoming session of SWC, November 2020.

Even if you've done SWC before, please read all of the information as it may have changed since the last time you participated.

~

Scratch Writing Camp (also known as SWC) is a triannual writing camp, running during the months of March, July and November. During SWC, you make a word goal for yourself, and try to reach that by the end of camp. There's also a competitive aspect with cabin points (you'll be in one of 12 cabins), and you can do activities such as word sprints or word crawls for points :) The camp runs from the 1st of November to the 30th of November. It's online so you can be there 5 minutes or 3 hours a day, at any time. Daily participation is not mandatory, although regular updates are encouraged.

~

To sign up, simply fill out this form in the comments below:
1. Do you have any plans in November that will affect your activity levels?
2. On a scale of 1-10, how active will you be in November?
3. What is your timezone? (this is needed for evening out timezones for cabin wars) -- no need to provide if it is too specific
4. Of the leaders listed below, which would you like to have as your leader?
5. What is your word goal? (a good starting goal for an inexperienced camper would be around 5,000 – 8,000)
6. What is your WPM? WPM is words per minute- an average of how many words you type/write in a minute. To check, go to https://www.typingtest.com, and put the number that you get in this answer, not 'High' or 'Average'
7. Have you participated in SWC before?
8. In the case you have participated in SWC, have you ever won a prize in the Writing Competition? (you do not need to answer this if you have never been a part of SWC before.)

The cabin name has no correlation with what genre you write- you could be writing historical fiction if you were in the Dystopian cabin, or any other combination. Make your choice based on the leaders!

You are not allowed to hold a reserve over 10,000 words. Reserves are word banks you save up over camp as a strategy so other cabins do not know how many words they need to write to beat you. Exceeding your reserve count could result in it not counting entirely, so be sensible!

The word goal limit is 100,000 words. It is impossible to write this amount and still be healthy – to hit that goal would require you to write over 3000 words each day. Once you hit 100,000 words, your leader will not be allowed to count any more from you.

If you are having issues with someone in your cabin, please tell both your leader and myself. We can help sort it out, or (as a last resort) move you to a different cabin.

Remember to follow Scratch Guidelines above anything else – so no insulting or gossiping about other people.

If you are not placed in your first choice of cabin, it is likely because in camper sorting we need to even out camper counts. You may be asked for a second choice of leader if the cabin you requested has been extremely popular.

You are expected to know all of this, but we are not too strict. Please remember that this is just an online writing camp! Prioritise your own health and schoolwork over SWC. There are no prizes for winning SWC, and I would much prefer it if you got 8 hours of sleep rather than none because you were writing towards a cabin war all night!
