When it came time for me to do a sound check with Emma, she asked me what she should play; I told her it didn't really matter, but I had had Bob Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" stuck in my head all day - so if she knew that, she should play her version of that for me. Emma told me she knew (and loved) that song but had never played it before, and looked up the chords quickly - and then sang one of the most powerful versions of the oft covered tune I had ever heard. While she was playing it, I was so excited that I ran out of the control room to find Steve so I could show him the musical talent we had in our studio ("damn, this girl has some pipes!"). At my persistence, Don't Think Twice became the first song in the set Emma played, and the rest of her set was equally as powerful and melodic. Emma's set, made up of a mixture of classic folk songs and solid original tracks, had the maturity, passion, and talent of a girl much older than 18. -BWH
