My channel is dedicated to "The Lord of the Rings". A chapter by chapter consideration of Tolkien's masterpiece. One question to keep in mind - what lies at the heart of the divisive responses to LOTR?

Edmund Wilson had this observation:

The wars are never dynamic; the ordeals give no sense of strain; the fair ladies would not stir a heartbeat; the horrors would not hurt a fly ( Wilson, Edmond. 'Oo, those awful Orcs!' "The Nation" 14 April 1956).

Wars? Mr. Wilson, did we read the same book. There is one war, the War of the Ring. There are multiple battles. Wilson's all too often faulty identification of facts leaves me to wonder if it was not his daughter who read the novel to him and if he did not doze of at times.
